Jakarta’s hovels, rubbish and infrastructure

Over the past few days I’ve explored Jakarta. I bought a bike and have been riding around, which has been more stressful than anticipated. The roads are just terrible. Heaps of traffic and no one follows the road rules. Traffic lights may as well not exist. I actually found one that had all the lights on at once…

It’s a real shame everything is so poluted and grimy. The lack of basic things like footpaths make the place more difficult to navigate. What paths they do have mainly seem to be over drainage ditches and in horrible disrepair with crumbling concrete and rotten wood leaving holes and complete drop offs in to the water below.
